Setting up a client’s under-construction page

Training Objectives/Goals

At the end of this session, you will learn how to set up an under-construction page.

Why clients request for an Under Construction page (UC page):

  • The client’s actual website is not ready, but would like something up already.
  • The client’s current site is non-functional and prefers just a simple coming soon page.

When should you offer this option:

When a client doesn’t have an existing website, proactively offer a coming soon page. This will help you get used to setting up one, and at the same time, we’ll already be working on an actual live rather than staging site environment.

When should you not offer this option:

If a client has an existing site, especially one that is ranking, we shouldn’t attempt to replace it with an under-construction page. Instead, we should offer a temporary Agent Pro site (for Semi-Custom sites and up) so the client doesn’t lose any existing content with SEO juice.

What do I need from the client to get started?

  1. Ask the client to choose a theme from: https://www.agentimage.com/resources/under-construction-page-themes/ If a client wants a custom design, we’ll have to charge them at an hourly rate of $150 and place a quote in Basecamp to determine the number of hours to charge.
  2. Ask for the client’s domain name, and domain registry login credentials. Pro tip: If the client’s domain name is with Go Daddy, request for delegated access instead. Instructions.
  3. Contact Information, logo etc to add to the under construction page.

Can I make some tweaks to the coming soon template?

As much as possible, we should stick to what we have on the public UC page but should a client ask for minor tweaks, we should be able to do so. Extent of changes would be: Color change to match the client’s brand, font change (only if requested by client, we do not proactively offer! Commercial/paid fonts: files must be provided by client).

Okay I already have the above items, what’s next?

  1. Great! Check and make sure the domain log in information is working. Oftentimes, there’s a 2 factor authentication (2FA).
  2. Generate your staging link via Bedrock autolauncher. Staging Site. This is the test site of the design, content and functionality. Exactly how a live site would work and look like.
  3. Create a task to CID. See sample task here: https://na97.salesforce.com/a1L2H000005gJcB
  4. Present the UC page to the client and get a written approval to go live.
  5. Point the records and do steps 1,2,4*(just the Postfix page, Go Live not needed)*, 5,7,8 here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gX49ez2h9DUGq7lPwcfhDdNSPBxlPfZCPpxEINC3iVw/edit?usp=sharing
  6. If everything is good, inform the client.
  7. Pat yourself on the back, enjoy your cuppa tea/coffee/water.

What is the timeline to set up an under construction page?

Takes about 1-2 business days, provided you have all the necessary information.

Do you need it sooner? Make sure you have all the details/assets you need from the client, then create the FEWD task and ask your manager to set your task as a high priority.

What if the client wants a custom design?

The goal of a coming soon page is to put something up as soon as possible. While we can set up a custom design, this will take time and is considered custom work. The charge will depend on the complexity of the design. We’ll need a Basecamp quote for it.
